Miles was brought up in Buckinghamshire arriving in Newcastle in 1985 as a student at Newcastle Polytechnic. After studying Creative and Performing Arts he trained to be a teacher. He taught in secondary, special education and primary schools. Following his role as Deputy Head at Christ Church, Shieldfield Miles became Headteacher at West Walker and finally served as Head of Hotspur Primary in Heaton for over 15 years.
Miles had a particular interest in cultural education and was a board member of Culture Bridge North East, Chair of Newcastle Cultural Education Partnership and Chair of the Trustees of the national singing charity Sing for Pleasure. He has been a visiting lecturer at many universities and spoken at a variety of conferences. He is a keen singer and conductor of choirs.
Miles is married to Gary Wallis-Clarke and has two adult children.
In 2020 Miles trained as a celebrant and left teaching after 31 years. In addition to celebrancy Miles and Gary, also a former Headteacher, offer support to schools through their company Palladio Education Ltd.
